Welcome to the Motown Mansion!  The Mansion is one of the most unique and intimate environments in the City of Detroit. The Motown Mansion is a private residence which has served as a social, civic and business gathering place for years.  Built in 1917 by lumber magnate Nels Michelson and formerly the residence of Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, the Mansion is a testament to Italian renaissance design.  The purpose of this web site is to share the history of this magnificent mansion, discuss the award-winning restoration of the property and to share the exciting developments of the renaissance that is taking over the City of Detroit!    In addition, we will share information about the business interests of the current owners and their various community and civic endeavors.

With its historic ties to the music industry, the Motown Mansion has hosted private concerts by Motown artists as well as other entertainers.  The current owners have continued the tradition of hosting community and civic events as well as private music-related and entertainment activities.  These benefits help important charities in the community to raise funding to continue their work.  In this way, the owners are allowing the Motown Mansion to be used to serve the community and the citizens of the City of Detroit!  The owners have hosted viewer listening parties,  symphony concerts and other musical performances. In addition, the owners of the Motown Mansion are members of the 918 Club, a private club which is dedicated to the appreciation and preservation of historic homes in the City of Detroit.

The Motown Mansion is a testament to Old World craftsmanship, from the black walnut paneled living room, to the carved quarter-sawn oak library, the craftsmanship is stunning.  The Mansion includes a marble-columned grand ballroom, seven separate dining areas, a private gymnasium and fabulous outdoor spaces situated on almost two acres in the City of Detroit!  The current owners are working to update the outdoor spaces by creating terraces and formal gardens in the style of the original gardens of the residence.  The current owners believe that they have an awesome responsibility to restore and protect the Mansion for future generations.  They will continue to support the architecture and inspiration of fine craftsmanship that was established by the original owners.
Elaborate stained glass work may be found throughout the Mansion.
 
Attention to detail, as in this marble fireplace mantel, is a tribute to the art and architecture of the Mansion.
The residence features a state of the art kitchen facility, five fireplaces, an extensive wine cellar, numerous stained glass windows and antique light fixtures throughout.  In addition, the Motown Mansion boasts secret passageways connecting the various buildings on the property, a miniature 9-hole golf course, a billiards room and a two-lane bowling alley.
The Motown Mansion is filled with antiques and fine art from the personal collection of the owners. Some of the art, including all of the stained glass found throughout the residence, is original to the construction of the Mansion.  The current owners have updated the Mansion to provide for cable and internet connections.  In this regard, not only does the Mansion have cable in many of the rooms, but the owners have also had the entire property wired for CAT 5e cable, creating a private intranet networking system.  The owners also invested in a sophisticated phone system which connects all of the building on the property.  This makes it easier for them to page each other and communicate!

The Motown Mansion has hosted many public figures over the years. Whether for an intimate dinner for two, a sophisticated supper for many, each event has been memorable!
